Safety and blocking

Nectvia gives you several ways to control who can reach you. The settings are in Settings > Privacy.

Blocking a member

Choose Block on a member's profile, or on a message request. A block takes effect at once:

  • any connection between you is removed, and any follows in either direction;
  • the member is removed from your lists;
  • neither of you can see the other's posts, articles or profile while signed in;
  • neither of you can message, follow, comment on or connect with the other;
  • your conversation with the member is hidden from both of you.

The member is not told about the block. Nectvia never shows a block to the person who was blocked.

Blocked members are listed under Blocked members in Settings > Privacy. Choose Unblock to remove a block. Unblocking does not restore the connection, follows or list memberships that the block removed.

Blocks from Bluesky

If your Nectvia account is linked to a Bluesky account, Nectvia reads the blocks in that Bluesky account and applies them on Nectvia too. This runs once a day. You can also run it at once with Refresh from Bluesky. Nothing is written to Bluesky when Nectvia reads your blocks.

A block that came from Bluesky is marked From Bluesky in your list of blocked members. It cannot be removed on Nectvia. Remove it on Bluesky, or it returns the next time the blocks are refreshed.

Nectvia can also publish the blocks you make on Nectvia to Bluesky, if you turn on Also publish my Nectvia blocks to Bluesky in your publishing settings. It is off by default. Bluesky blocks are public: anyone can see whom you blocked. Turning the toggle off does not remove blocks already published. To remove them, choose Remove my published blocks in Settings > Privacy. Removing them from Bluesky does not unblock anyone on Nectvia.

Message requests

Your connections can always message you. In Settings > Privacy, under Who can message me, you choose what happens with everyone else:

  • Connections, and message requests from others: a member who is not a connection can send you one first message as a request.
  • Connections only: members who are not connections cannot message you at all.

Requests wait under Message requests on the Messages page. Opening a request shows who sent it and what they wrote. You can then choose:

  • Accept: the conversation opens and you can both write.
  • Ignore: the request is hidden from you. The sender is not told. They cannot send you a new request for 30 days.
  • Block: blocks the sender, as described above.

Until you accept, the sender cannot send you a second message. Deleting a request counts as ignoring it.

In the same settings section, Who can follow me lets you limit followers to My connections only.

Reporting

You can report a profile, a post, a comment, an article, a message, a job or a company page. Choose Report on the item, pick a reason, and add a note of up to 1,000 characters if you want. You can also tick Also block this member in the same step.

Nectvia reviews every report. The person you report is not told that you reported them.

Your reports are listed in Settings > Reports, with the status of each one: Under review, No action or Action taken. Nectvia also sends you a notification when a report has been reviewed.

A conversation can be reported from your list of blocked members with Report conversation, so you can report a member after blocking them.
