Invite codes and the waitlist

Nectvia admits new members gradually. While sign-up is invite-only, a new account needs either an invite code from an existing member or a sign-up link from the waitlist. This applies to sign-up with an email address and to sign-up with Bluesky.

Using an invite code

An invite code comes from a member who is already on Nectvia. Enter it in the Invite code box on the waitlist page and choose Use this code. If you have a Bluesky account, you can enter the code in the Bluesky box on the same page instead.

Each code admits one account. A code cannot be used if it has expired, if the member who created it has withdrawn it, or if someone else has already used it. In each of these cases the page shows the same message: "That code cannot be used. It may have expired, been withdrawn, or already been used by someone else."

When you sign up with an email address, your code is held for you while you confirm the address. Nobody else can use it during that time. The code is used up only when you enter the confirmation code from the email. If you do not confirm within 48 hours, the sign-up is removed and the invite code becomes usable again. See Signing up.

Joining the waitlist

If you have no code, leave your email address under No code? and choose Join the waitlist. The page confirms your request in the same words for every address, so it never reveals whether an address is already on the list. Adding the same address again does not move you up or down.

When a place opens up, Nectvia emails you a sign-up link. The link is valid for 14 days. Nectvia stores your address only to send you that invitation, and deletes it on request.

Inviting other people

Members can create invite codes on the Invites page. The page shows how many invites you have left, for example "3 of 5 invites left". The number of invites per member is set by Nectvia and can change.

To invite someone:

  1. Choose Create an invite code.
  2. Copy the code and send it to the person however you like, for example by email or in a message.

A code is valid for 30 days after you create it. Each code has a status:

  • Ready to share: nobody has used it yet.
  • Waiting for confirmation: someone has signed up with it and has not yet confirmed their email address. The page shows no name or address for that person, because the details are not yet confirmed. A code in this state cannot be shared again.
  • Used: someone joined with it. The page shows who joined.
  • Withdrawn: you withdrew it.
  • Expired: the 30 days passed before anyone used it.

A code waiting for confirmation counts against your allowance. If the person does not confirm within 48 hours, the hold ends. The code is then ready to share again, or expired if its 30 days have passed.

Withdrawing a code

Choose Withdraw next to a code to stop it working. The invite returns to your allowance. An expired code also returns to your allowance. A used code cannot be withdrawn.

If you withdraw a code that is waiting for confirmation, that person's sign-up ends when they try to confirm their address.

What an inviter can see

Nectvia never learns who you gave a code to, and it never tells you who has not used one. Once someone joins with your code, the Invites page shows their name next to it.
