I think LinkedIn has lost its way. Over the years, I’ve watched it turn into some strange combination of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. My feed is full of things I never asked to see. “Suggested for you” posts, influencers selling snake oil, curated content designed to generate engagement, and more than enough toxic behaviour. Meanwhile, posts from people I actually follow sometimes turn up weeks after they were published. At what point did following someone stop meaning you actually wanted to see what they posted? I’ve become frustrated with the idea that an algorithm knows better than I do what I want to read. So, for the past year or so, I’ve been building something to change that. It’s called Nectvia. I’ve been working on it, figuring things out, changing what didn’t work and trying to build the kind of social platform I’d actually want to use. The idea is simple. Your feed should belong to you. If you follow someone, you see their posts. If you don’t, their content doesn’t get pushed into your feed. No ads. No “suggested for you”. No influencers appearing because an algorithm decided you need to see them. And if you block someone, they’re gone from your experience. But there’s something else that’s bothered me about social platforms for a long time. Your data should belong to you, not the platform. Nectvia is built around the AT Protocol, allowing you to host your data on your own Personal Data Server (PDS). If you decide to leave, you can take your data with you. You shouldn’t have to start again because you’ve had enough of a platform. Nectvia also supports importing your LinkedIn export, including connections, posts and experience. Moving away shouldn’t mean losing years of your professional history. This is still a work in progress. The private data functionality in AT Protocol isn’t stable enough yet, so that will come when the protocol is ready. I’m not claiming to have solved social media. I’m building the kind of place I’d actually like to use. After more than a year of working on this, it’s time to let other people in. I’ve opened a waitlist for people who want to test Nectvia, find bugs, challenge my decisions and help make it better. I’m sure there are things I’ve missed. That’s why I want others involved. If that sounds like you: https://nectvia.work I’d love to hear what you think. Even if you think I’ve got something wrong. Social media should be about the people you choose to connect with. Not the people an algorithm chooses for you.
