Who can see what

Every post and article on Nectvia has its own visibility. You choose it when you write, and you can change it later by editing. Your profile, your posts and your articles each follow the rules on this page.

Visibility of posts and articles

A post has three settings, shown next to Visibility: in the composer:

  • Public: anyone can see it, on Nectvia and on the open web.
  • Connections only: only you and your accepted connections can see it.
  • Only me: only you can see it.

An article has two settings: Public and Connections. A draft, and an article saved with Save privately, is visible only to you.

A follow grants no visibility. A follower who is not a connection sees only your public posts and articles. See Connections and follows.

Blocking works across all settings. A member you have blocked, or who has blocked you, cannot see your posts or articles on Nectvia while signed in, whatever their visibility. Public content stays public on the open web. See Safety and blocking.

Posts and articles you imported from LinkedIn follow the choice you made at import time. The default keeps them visible only to you.

Who can comment

Each post also has a Who can comment: setting:

  • Everyone: any member who can see the post can comment.
  • Connections: only your connections can comment. Other members see "Only connections of the author can comment."
  • Nobody: comments are off. Members see "Comments are turned off for this post."

You can always comment on your own post. You can change the setting later by editing the post.

Commenting needs a Nectvia account. People who are not signed in cannot comment.

Your profile has a public address: nectvia.work/@ followed by your username. Anyone can open it without signing in.

Each public post has its own permanent link on your profile, which opens without signing in. Public articles can also be read without signing in, and are listed on your public blog page. You and anyone else can share these links outside Nectvia.

Public pages, including public posts and articles, can be found and indexed by search engines.

Content set to Connections only, Connections or Only me never has a logged-out page. Someone who opens the link of a post they are not allowed to see gets the same "not found" page as for a post that does not exist. The page does not reveal whether the post exists.

Publishing outside Nectvia

If you link an AT Protocol account, such as a Bluesky account, you can choose to publish some of your data to it. Only public posts and articles are ever published there. Content in that account is public: anyone can read it, not just people you are connected with. See Publishing to your AT Protocol account.

Changing your mind

You can change the visibility of a post or an article at any time. Changing a public post to Connections only or Only me removes its logged-out page. Copies that other people or services made while it was public, such as a search engine's cached copy, are outside Nectvia's control.
